Hardline Ex- Lawmaker J.A. Kast Voted In as Chile's Next Leader.

In a decisive final ballot, hardline politician José Antonio Kast has secured the presidency in Chile.

A Commanding Victory

After over 99% of votes tallied, Kast won 58.17% of the vote, beating leftist candidate Jeannette Jara, who obtained 41.83%.

This marks Kast's third bid for the presidency, having in the past been lost by the sitting president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 final vote.

Platform Focused On Law and Order and Migration

Known for his strong Catholic views and admiration for the rule of former leader Augusto Pinochet, Kast's campaign was largely centered on promises to combat increasing insecurity and significantly curb migration.

He repeatedly blamed migrants, particularly the around 330,000 unauthorized individuals in Chile, for public safety problems. Throughout the race, he issued an stern warning for them to exit before the new term begins or face deportation.

His policy ideas envisioned controversial measures such as erecting camps, high walls, perimeter fencing, and increasing the army presence on the northern frontier.

Part of a Regional Shift

Many observers view Kast's success as aligning with a wider rightward shift in South America, coming after recent electoral wins in countries like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.

Yet, other analysts further describe it as a continuation of the established alternation of power between left-wing and right-wing governments since Chile's establishment of democracy in 1990.

Governing Lacking a Strong Majority

In spite of his decisive electoral triumph, Kast is not expected to command an overall majority in parliament, not in the Chamber of Deputies nor the Senate, even if all right-leaning parties are grouped together.

This legislative landscape might challenge his agenda, such as a promise to slash public spending by billions within 18 months—a plan for which he has not detailed specifics.

"There are numerous things about what a Kast administration will operate that are uncertain because he has not said his methods for do them," commented a political professor.

The professor added, "On the economy, it is almost certain we will see spending cuts typical of the right. However the area with much less doubt is on public safety, because that has been his flagship issue during the campaign."
