Chicago's MLB Team Secure Japanese Slugger Munetaka Murakami on a Lucrative Two-Year Agreement.

In a significant move for their rebuilding roster, the American League club have signed slugger Munetaka Murakami, finalizing a lucrative contract with the power-hitting player.

Financial Terms and Added Benefits

The deal includes a seven-figure signing bonus, issued within 30 days, alongside compensation of $16M for the 2026 season and $17 million for the following year.

Additionally, Murakami's final-year pay can increase based on award achievements in 2026:

  • $1 million for being named the league MVP award.
  • $500,000 for placing as runner-up or in third place in MVP voting.
  • $250K for ranking between fourth and tenth.
  • $250,000 for earning the top rookie honor.

The agreement also stipulates that he cannot be sent to the minors without his permission and allows him to become a unrestricted player at the end of the term. Additional perks include a dedicated interpreter and flight reimbursement between his home country and the States.

Transfer Payment and Team Legacy

As part of the transaction, Chicago must pay a posting fee of $6,575,000 to the Yakult Swallows, Murakami's longtime team in Japan's NPB. The Swallows get a supplemental fee of any triggered performance bonuses.

Murakami joins the ranks as the fourth-ever player from Japan to suit up for the White Sox, joining pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Notably, Takatsu previously coached Murakami while both were in Japan.

Player Profile

Murakami, a lefty bat who turns 26 on February 2nd, bolsters a promising lineup in Chicago that includes prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The team are finished with a 60-102 season, placing at the bottom in the AL Central but showing a 19-game improvement from the year before campaign.

A two-time Most Valuable Player honors in '21 and '22, Murakami is famous for a record-breaking 2022 season where he launched 56 homers, surpassing the all-time record for a NPB hitter formerly held by legend Sadaharu Oh. That year also made him the youngest player ever to win Japan's elusive batting Triple Crown.

His last year was shortened to a partial schedule due to an muscle issue. Despite striking out 64 Ks, he hit .273 with 22 homers and 47 runs batted in.

Over his career tenure with the Swallows, Murakami has accumulated a .270 batting average with 246 homers, 647 RBI, and 977 strikeouts in nearly 900 games. He started playing mostly at first base, he has more recently played to third.

Global Stage Success

Murakami's clutch hitting were on full display during the 2023 World Baseball Classic. In the penultimate game against Mexico, he hit a walk-off two-base hit that brought home two fellow Japanese stars for a thrilling one-run win. The following day in the final against the United States, he hit a tying homer in the second inning, setting the stage for Japan's 3-2 title triumph.

The lefty slugger is slated to be unveiled at a media availability on the coming Monday.
