This situation follow this month's bushfires in another state, which caused the destruction of properties and fatalities. Intense heat alerts have additionally been issued for later this week in areas within South Australia and New South Wales, as a ridge of high pressure shifts eastward, bringing blazing sunshine to a broad swath of the area.

The mix of extremely dry land and relentless high temperatures creates a volatile situation for firefighters.

In another part of the world, a metropolis was plunged into blackout last week after powerful gusts damaged the city’s power grid, with falling trees bringing down electricity cables.
